Day 9 of 9: Go with the Flow and Flow to Grow

Sat Dec 19 - New Moon Novena, Day 9/9

Moon ☽ in Aries ♈

  • Moon ☽ Trine Saturn ♄ 6:01 am PST
  • Mercury ☿ Conjunct Pluto ♇ 10:55 am PST
  • Moon ☽ Square Pluto ♇ 2:18 pm PST
  • Moon ☽ Square Mercury ☿ 2:41 pm PST
  • Moon ☽ Conjunct Uranus ♅ 5:35 pm PST
  • Moon ☽ Quincunx Venus ♀ 7:35 pm PST

We are likely to find it easier to acknowledge responsibility for and temper our emotions in the early part of the day. Another way of looking at this is that your emotions will not flow (out of control) like a flash flood, a tempestuous ocean, or even a body of water with strong unpredictable currents. Those feelings are more like the waters flowing through a river with defined banks and a definite path through the landscape. Boundaries are sometimes a very good thing. For one, they help us observe and go with the flow more easily.

This isn't to say it'll be smooth sailing, however. Remember, the Moon is in Aries now, so we're in the incipient stages of developing new emotional tools and awareness. In the beginning, there's so much potential and eagerness that there may be an urge to get out there and share what we feel, know, and think now. Just be careful.

Indeed, you are probably keenly aware today of transformation and rebirth into a new cycle of development. You have the ability to articulate it with more clarity now.

That transformative regenerative force, however, is met with emotional resistance. Recall that the banks of that river define its trajectory. The flow may be interrupted by twists & turns, obstacles may be in the river that need removal, etc. This instinctive resistance to change presents challenges that you're now motivated to address.

When you overcome the obstacles, you can begin to clearly communicate your perspectives, your thoughts. As you're expressing your unique take on where you're headed, your instinctive reactions start to change as well, your new ways of seeing, feeling about, and behaving in the world begin to come real.

Unexpected assistance in the break from normal patterns may show up. Like in an earthquake, cracks suddenly appear on the surface. Those open up to reveal emotional layers you may not have realized were there. Your intuitive sense tells you that the new approaches you're beginning to experience feel more comfortable and safe.

Speaking of comfort, there is a distinction to be made between comfortable and pleasurable. And the two may be difficult to merge together today. The Moon in Aries is seeking the keys to emotional security (comfort) in new territory, by forging new paths, through new beginnings. Meanwhile Venus is seeking harmony and pleasure in the depths of emotional attachment.

You've now seen this pattern show up a number of times over the past several days, haven't you? There's been a pretty intense struggle between being pulled by a desire for what feels good in the deep waters of familiar bonds while at the same time striving to find comfort and security by forging ahead to create personal shifts in your attitudes, reactions, and closest ties.

Realize the complexity of the whats, wheres, and hows that may be familiar and the whats, wheres, and hows that may be new. It might not be as transparent when you're examining your personal situation as you first imagined.

Commencement Ceremony

As the final post of this lagniappe New Moon Novena, we are now left to our own devices as we continue on the road of building relationships around us.

The seeds of connection have been scattered on the ground, fertilized, watered, and are beginning to emerge now. The blossoms will reflect the seeds you've planted and how you take care of them.

Remember that it's your garden. If there are weeds or plants you don't want in there, you have the tools and strength to pull them up and compost them. That just makes room for you to plant more or leave space for you to appreciate what's in there already from different perspectives.

Reflection Questions

How are the boundaries you're identifying in your environment keeping you protected and flowing on course?

What transformations that you're aware of now are you able to more clearly articulate? How will these assist you in intentionally manifesting a supportive network of friends, family, and community over the next week?

Which aspects of the familiar context meet your needs, provide security, and allow you to feel comfortable? Which aspects of the familiar allow you to feel good, bring you pleasure, and reflect your desires?

Which aspects of the new context you're seeking and creating meet your needs, provide security, and allow you to feel comfortable? Which aspects of the new allow you to feel good, bring you pleasure, and reflect your desires?

Day 8 of 9: Is Moving Ever Fun? How Holding on to the Familiar Has Held Us Back from Emotional Growth

Fri Dec 18 - New Moon Novena, Day 8/9

Moon ☽ enters Aries ♈

  • Moon ☽ Opposite Jupiter ♃ 12:41 am PST
  • Moon ☽ Square Sun ☉ 7:14 am PST (first quarter)
  • Moon ☽ Void of Course  7:14 am PST
  • Moon ☽ enters Aries ♈ 1:26 pm PST
  • Venus ♀ Quincunx Uranus ♅ 7:56 pm PST

With only tomorrow remaining in this nine-day voyage with the Moon through the Zodiac, we spend part of the day packing our bags in Pisces, and then move on to a new start in Aries. When you're getting ready to begin something new, many times there are lists of what to bring, what to remember, what you need, what you don't really need to take with you, etc. Today's heavenly set up is pretty much on par with that.

The Moon's opposition to Jupiter indicates a tug-of-war that could take a little bit of time to resolve. The struggle is one where our inner constructs and emotions want to hold on to the familiar while another part wants to explore new ideas or new places and hope for the best possible outcome. The risk here is of inaction. Big, mighty, expansive Jupiter needs some leisure time with all that expansion. Be mindful of your activity levels and intake as you travel. While it does take a lot of fuel to nourish expansion and growth, that same fuel can generate additional unwanted weight (baggage, anyone?).

Travel light.

The good news is that Jupiter rules both Sagittarius and Pisces, so it's pretty powerful and in control right now with one luminary in each Sign. My bet is on healthy emotional growth and good fortune to win this game.

As the sun shines its (limited) light on a new day, we may see some challenges between our private and public senses of self. Authority, autonomy, and personal sovereignty is confronted by doubt or worry, either in yourself or in a father, son, or other close male influencer. The doubt is fueled by emotional concerns and is probably a reflection of habitual feelings and reactions, although it could just be to keep the waters calm and the people around you content.

(For what it's worth, I am picturing this as a conversation happening between a mother and father as the station wagon is being loaded up before you pull out of the driveway. Can you relate?)

With bags packed, the plane, train, or automobile is ready to move. The regular hassles of transit from sign to sign go by fairly fast today, so the feelings surrounding this new beginning will kick in more quickly.

And sometimes getting where we're going fast means the potholes we hit along the way feel even more uncomfortable.

First arriving in a new [emotional] space, it may seem like there's so much to do. New feelings start to emerge like kids popping out of a car after being cooped up on a car ride. They may burst out and be accompanied by many reactions to these novel contexts in your personal life. Keep that Full Moon aim in mind of intentionally creating a space in your world (ahem, in your heart) to bring family, friends, and community together around you or bring yourself into a supportive community. This may help those emotional outbursts not get too out of hand.

Evolution is definite. The move happened. Change is here.

That said, there are inevitably challenges that accompany any move, especially when it comes to settling in to the next phase. The first big emotional shift is how to reconcile the differences between a love for comfortable, secure domestic relationships (let's say, wherever we have experienced them in the past) with very strong urges to freely explore the significance of a new, larger social context. While this could refer to where we're recently coming from, it's more likely to refer to where we originally come from (roots, ancestors, personal & family history). We truly and deeply want to understand how where we come from and where we're going fit together.

There's a simultaneous desire to break from tradition and to hold on to it tightly. This is likely to show up in our closest intimate relationships. Although we could feel stuck in this position of not understanding the roles of those two positions in our connection to community, with Uranus and the Moon both in Aries now, new approaches to the mysteries of interpersonal affinity may suddenly appear.

When you get over the potential initial shock of these revelations, they can help contextualize the role of familiar emotional intimacy going forward in your ongoing quest of understanding.

Reflection Questions

What emotional baggage have you held on to that has kept you from exploring new positions of feeling connected to friends, family, or your community (whichever area you're focusing on during this NMN)?

Which of those concerns are you honestly willing to let go of now? Are you willing to break from the emotional comfort of tradition and habit to make room for healthy growth?

In which intimate bonds have you felt stuck? How far are you willing to venture to get yourself unstuck?

Whom do you support in your network? When you feel like your personal sovereignty and self-esteem are being challenged, to whom do you turn for support?

Day 7 of 9: Transforming Relationships through POD & POC

Thu Dec 17 - New Moon Novena, Day 7/9

Moon ☽ in Pisces ♓

  • Moon ☽ Square Saturn ♄ 2:13 am PST
  • Venus ♀ Sextile Pluto ♇ 3:19 am PST
  • Moon ☽ Sextile Mercury ☿ 5:24 am PST
  • Moon ☽ Sextile Pluto ♇ 10:58 am PST
  • Moon ☽ Trine Venus ♀ 11:39 am PST
  • Moon ☽ Quincunx Mars ♂ 9:40 pm PST

With the Moon still shimmering on the shifting waters of Pisces, our emotions dance in the inner realms of memory, perception, and intuition.

Early today tensions may arise in how we feel about the rules or sense of responsibility that we remember our mothers, teachers, or female elders instilling in us in the past.

We may have had overly sensitive responses to situations where structure and self-discipline are required to get work done. Rather than letting past feelings come to the surface to dwell in, simply recognizing this struggle can inspire us to focus on the tasks at hand and ultimately accomplish what we set out to do.

There's a powerful aspect of cooperation and opportunity for transformation in our relationships and partnerships today. While this is creative force, note that this particular energy is one of regeneration and rebirth. The transformation possible relies on both the power of destruction (POD) and the power of creation (POC).

In metamorphosis, for example, the caterpillar becomes nothing more than a memory, genetic elements are recycled, and a butterfly emerges.

Contributing to this phoenix-like opportunity for transformation are our innate intuitive abilities. Today there's a smooth flow of energy between these emotive inner workings and our current joint ventures with other people. We get where we want to go today by balancing reasoned thought and logic with trust in the emotional wisdom of intuition. Maintaining balance of thought and feelings will go a long way to help you clearly express yourself and your intentions.

When communication channels are free & clear of obstacles, relationships tend to be healthier and more harmonious don't they?

Despite that positive, groovy flow of emotional energy and the knowledge that you have the potential to transform your relationships, we may feel challenged by aspects of practical implementation. It may seem like it's going to be hard to integrate the awareness we've gained and shifts we've already felt. Breathe, relax & march onward!

In order to boost the drive needed to create real-world harmonious partnerships, some (not necessarily minor) adjustments in communication are required. Plan and make the logical communication adjustments that you know are important. When you do, your confidence, determination, and activity levels will rise. As those energy levels are increasing, you can start creating the transformations possible today.

Reflection Questions

In what ways can your instinctive reactions to rules, regulations, time constraints, and responsibilities be improved?

As they say — and appropriately timed with the upcoming new calendar year: Out with the old; in with the new! To give life to your relationships and interactions (professional, social, romantic, familial), what must you figuratively (or literally) destroy?

Think about the intention you set out with at the beginning of this month's New Moon Novena seven days ago. In the close community you're creating around yourself every day, how do you express your needs, desires, and intentions?

Communication is multi-directional. It's at least a two-way street. It's about speaking and listening. When do you listen best? How can you listen more?

Recognizing that you are responsible for keeping your communication channels clear, how do you communicate effectively already and what are you willing to do to enhance your methods?
